- I recieved my hard copy of Springer’s new “Personalized and Precision Medicine Informatics” book this week. I was pleased to contribute to the chapter titled “The Genomic Medicine Record and Omic Ancillary Systems” led by colleagues from Northwestern University.

Sep 3-5, 2019 - Equity, Diversity, and Data Science in Genomics Workshop
- I had the honor of presenting at the NHGRI-funded Equity, Diversity, and Data Science in Genomics Workshop hosted by the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. Our Session on the “Implementation of EHRs and Genomic Medicine in Diverse Communities” led to some nice discussion on considerations for and cautions surrounding the use of EHR data and tools in delivering genomic medicine and conducting research on social determinants of health.

- Ting (Helen) He successfully completed her Master of Science in the Division of Health Sciences Informatics at Johns Hopkins University. The title of her thesis is “Comorbidity Clusters in Clinical Conditions: An Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.” She will be joining the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University as a Research Associate.

- Mullai Murugan (Baylor College of Medicine) and I represented the eMERGE EHR integration working group in our co-presentation on “Genomics Rendering in FHIR” at the NCATS-funded Federated Data Query Workshop in Baltimore, MD.
Mar 26, 2019 - Congratulations to Stella!
- Stella Liang was awarded second place in the student paper competition held at AMIA 2019 Informatics Summit in San Francisco, CA. The title of her paper is “Detecting Patterns of Prescription Drug Use During Pregnancy and Lactation with Visualization Techniques.”
I feel honored to serve as Vice Chair of the Implementation track for AMIA 2019 Informatics Summit.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Mount Siani in New York to present on “Decision support in the era of genomic unsolicited health information” at their first Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine (IPM) seminar of the new year.

- Rohit Aakash successfully completed his Masters in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and will be joining Microsoft as a Software Engineer.
- Vibhu Jawa successfully completed his Masters in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and will be joining NVIDIA AI as a Data Scientist.
Dec 15, 2018 - Secondary BME and CS appointments
I now have secondary appointments in Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering and in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins. I look forward to interacting more with BME and CS faculty, staff and students.

Our eMERGE EHR integration working group paper titled “Empowering genomic medicine by establishing critical sequencing result data flows” was highlighted on the cover of the October issue of JAMIA.

Sep 5-6, 2018 - GM XI Meeting on Genomic Medicine Implementation.
NHGRI sponsered its 11th Genomic Medicine meeting - Genomic Medicine XI: Research Directions in Genomic Medicine Implementation. Larry Babb (Harvard/MIT), Christopher Chute (Hopkins), Gil Alterovitz (Harvard/MIT) and myself spoke and led the discussion with Howard McLeod (Moffitt Cancer Center) as moderator. Our session covered one of my favorite topics, the “Role of electronic health records in implementation.” I spoke about “Knowledge manaement for genomic clinical decision support.” More information about this meeting is here.
Sep 1, 2018 - Congratulations to Sidnei and Zubin!
- Zubin Khan successfully completed his thesis titled “Unmoderated Remote Usability Testing by Expert Reviewers: An Assessment of a Web-application for Sample Donors” and will graduate with is Masters of Science in Health Sciences Informatics from Johns Hopkins University.
- Sidnei McCrea will be joining the Temple University Postbaccalaureate program designed to prepare students for medical school.

Jul 4, 2018 - Congratulations to Ken, Stella, Sanchari and Shankar!
- Kenneth Roe successfully defended his dissertation titled “Coq Theorem Prover Static Analysis” (Advisor: Scott Smith) and graduated with his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University. He has begun his new role as Biomedical Data Scientist in the TIRI lab at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
- Stella Liang successfully completed her project titled “Estimated Trends of Medication Use among Employer Insured Women during Pregnancy” (paper under development). She has joined the PhD Program in Health Informatics at Drexel University.
- Sanchari Chowdhuri successfully completed her Capstone project titled “Identifying Phenotypes for Postpartum Depression from Forum Data Using a Name Entity Recognition Tool” and graduated with her Masters in Information Management from University of Maryland, College Park. She has joined Hughes Network Systems, LLC as Technical Staff in Sofware and Analytics.
- Shankar Ramesh successfully defended his Masters thesis titled “Survey on Health Device Use by MTurk Participants” and graduated with his M.S. in Human Computer Interaction from University of Maryland, College Park (co-Advised by CO Taylor and EK Choe). He has joined YinzCam Inc. as a UX/UI designer.
May 24, 2018 - NIH Genomics & Health Disparities IG
I appreciated the invitation from Vence Bonham (Senior Advisor to the NHGRI Director on Genomics and Health Disparities) to present at the Genomics & Health Disparities Interest Group Seminar. My presentation was on “Designing software interventions to increase the reach of genomics-informed care.” This venue provided a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and to engage in discussion with NIH investigators with diverse interests and areas of expertise. This group has a listserv for news and updates on events here.
GenomeWeb recently interviewed Luke Rasmussen (Northwestern) and myself (Johns Hopkins) about DocUBuild, a web application for creating and sharing documents that can be accessed electronically from EHR systems, following Luke’s presentation at AMIA 2018 Informatics Summit. The article titled “Researchers Develop Web App to Improve Curation, Delivery of Genomic Knowledge to Point of Care” can be accessed here.
Umberto Tachinardi was selected by the AMIA Board of Directors to Chair the AMIA 2019 Informatics Summit, March 25-28, in San Francisco. I am excited to serve as Vice Chair for the Implementation Track.

Mar 3, 2018 - NLM releases 2017-2027 Strategic Plan
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) released their 2017-2027 Strategic Plan titled “A Platform for Biomedical Discovery and Data Powered Health.” It was an honor to contribute to this plan as a Strategic Planning Member on their “Role of NLM in Supporting the Public’s Health: Clinical Systems, Public Health Systems and Services, and Personal Health” panel.

Nov 20, 2017 - 2017 Johns Hopkins Research Symposium on Engineering in Healthcare
There was a great turn out this year at our second annual Johns Hopkins Symposium on Engineering in Healthcare. It was co-hosted this year by The Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare and The Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Our panel on “Technology Teaming with People” with Shawna J. Perry, Ayse P. Gurses, Wanda Pratt and myself (moderated by Sara J. Czaja) generated some great discussion and ideas.
Nov 4-8, 2017 - AMIA 2017 Annual Symposium Student Paper Competition
I was proud to serve as a Student Paper Competition Committee member this year. The AMIA Student Paper Competition is held annually at the AMIA Annual Symposium. Eight finalist papers were presentated during the meeting and the judges selected first, second, and third place award winners in recognition of the best student papers. Oct 17, 2017 - Selected for Malone Center Fellowship
The Malone Center recently announced that I was selected to be the first recipient of the Malone Center Fellowship. See posting here for more information. I am initially collaborating with John C. Malone Assistant Professor Ilya Shpitser and Malone Center Director Gregory Hager to develop a new course on developing health IT applications… more details are soon to come!

I have an appointment to Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Information Studies at University of Maryland, College Park. I have been an Affiliate at University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) since 2013 and look forward to growing connections with Johns Hopkins University through collaborating on research and training students, particularly at the intersection of Human Computer Interaction and Biomedical Informatics.
